To Japan and Back Again: How a Corner of Guernsey Turned Japanese (A Celebration of Japanese Culture)

Local nobleman James Saumarez, 4th Baron de Saumarez repurchased his family estate on Guernsey in 1869 after it had been sold by his father. His fondness for the exotic and extravagant was brought to the fore when he acquired and imported an ancient Japanese temple and rebuilt it beside his stable yard. Its rooms remained true to the original, with sliding panels and tatami flooring. It was furnished with beautiful Japanese objects such as wooden neck-rests and painted scrolls. To Japan and Back Again tells the story of Lord Saumarez’s home and his enduring appreciation for the Orient.
